High Time in the High Sierra

by Jared Smith

Every September after Labor Day, stillness descends upon the Bishop Creek Canyon.  The kids are back in school, the family vacations have come and gone and the hustle and bustle of the summertime gives way to the peace and quiet of fall. It is during this time that serious trout anglers, the ones who are really in the know, head for the high country. Mild days, crisp cool evenings, light crowds, gorgeous fall colors and exceptional trout fishing are dead giveaways that autumn has arrived. Still, it’s safe to say that vast majority of area visitors miss out on what I consider to be hands down the best time of the year in the High Sierra.

Trolling and Drifting Tops at South Lake

9-23-09

South Lake

Some of the best September weather in years has equated to an excellent bite for trollers and drifters hitting the deeper water near boiler cove or mid-lake. The Flasher/Crawler combo at 3 to 5 colors has been best for trolling and Orange, Salmon Peach or Chunky Cheese PB has been best for those drifting. Lots of quality 2 to 3lb Alpers are being caught but the biggest of the week was a 4lb 7oz rainbow caught by Ryan Tarango of Rancho Cucamonga, CA on Orange PB.

Folks are still spotting lots and lots of fish at the inlets but the bite has really slowed down there for some reason. We're still waiting on the Browns to show up but some of the fly fishers did excellent on Brookies to 13", which have apparently started to stage in the shallower water in a pre-spawn pattern. After the brookies move in, the Browns are sure to follow not long after.

The lake level is steadily dropping but it's still plenty high to access all areas of the lake. No problems for private boaters either as the launch ramp is still good to go.

South Fork Bishop Creek

The flows are still moderate on the South Fork and the creek has been fishing quite good with the lighter crowds so long as the DFG continues their weekly stocking. Alpers are due this coming Friday so we're expecting some quality fish to come out over the weekend. Gulp! eggs in Orange or Pink seem to be working the best with spinners like Panther Martins and Mepps working best right after fish stockings.
